How Does Varex Manufacture Linear Accelerators?

Varex is the global leader in manufacturing of industrial Linear Accelerator. Accelerator X-Ray sources are complex systems. They contain several key technologies that work together to create highest energy x-rays.

At our facility in Las Vegas, NV, we produce, assemble and test sub-modules like modulators, magnetrons and klystrons, waveguides and electron guns.

Components passing quality control are then assembled into complete linear accelerator systems. The systems are tweaked and tuned for performance and reliability.

Optional components are added to the systems, completing the product. Final testing commences, customers often choosing to visit the factory for final acceptance testing.
Advantage for Varex Imaging Customers
Varex proprietary accelerator engineering and in-house manufacturing allows for higher dose, better resolution and excellent reliability. A Varex accelerator deserves the name “capital equipment”.

Technology at The Heart of Linear Accelerators

Modulators create short energetic electric pulses. Magnetrons and Klystrons amplify these pulses into very powerful microwave bursts.

Varex Waveguides are designed and manufactured in-house, at Las Vegas, NV.
Waveguides ingest the microwave bursts and use them to massively accelerate bunches of electrons – towards a tungsten target.
X-Band (smaller) and S-Band (larger) waveguides are available suiting a variety of purposes.

Accelerated to fractions of lightspeed, the electrons hit the target, creating highly energetic, forward focused x-rays.
From 15MV and 140Gy/min dose rate, to sub-mm focal spots, to pulse-by-pulse energy switching, Varex remains at the forefront of accelerator technology.
